Are Collagen Supplements Safe?
It is very rare that anyone has a reaction to collagen drinks unless the individual has a food allergy that the collagen is synthesized from. Collagen is made from cow, pork, fish, shellfish or chicken. If you are allergic to any of these protein sources, do not take the supplement. It is not worth risking an allergic reaction that can result in anything from hives to breathing difficulties or anaphylactic shock when there are other products that do the same thing but from different animal protein sources.
Those that have an allergy to chicken or egg should avoid collagen type II supplements. Studies have shown that there is a probable allergic reaction to collagen type II to those that have allergies to chicken or eggs. It is not worth the risk. Avoiding collagen II supplements is advised for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding as a precaution due to the lack of research.
Non-Life Threatening Side Effects
The most common side effect of collagen supplement was a lingering taste. A lingering taste has been reported but dissipated within 30-60 minutes. This was only reported in a small percentage of polled users of collagen.
The next most significant side effect, or benefit, reported is a decrease in appetite. The theory of the decrease in appetite is because collagen is a protein, it feeds the body and does not give the brain signals that it needs more fuel (aka food) to keep it going. Collagen is a common additive to many protein drinks that are used before a strenuous workout to fuel the workout or aid in recovery post-workout.
Other reported side effects include hypercalcemia, constipation, bone pain, fatigue, abnormal heart rhythms and hypersensitivity to allergens in food.
All reported side effects make up 0.1% of all collagen supplement users. With the exception of food allergies and those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is deemed that collagen supplements side effects have negligible side effects.
Adding supplements to aid the production and protection of collagen in the body should be done carefully. It is recommended that your doctor should discuss both the benefits and side effects of collagen supplements before beginning any regimen.
Findings have shown that taking up to 2.5mg of collagen orally should be safe for up to 24 weeks. The dosage and length of time should be discussed with your medical professional before starting taking collagen supplements.
The last thing to keep in mind with collagen supplement, or any supplement, is that the Federal Government does not regulate supplements like they do drugs and medications. The manufactures are not required to stringently test or prove their benefit claims.
Additionally, there is no third party testing required nor regulated and the ingredients are not required to match what the printing on the bottle. If you plan on taking supplements, choose a reputable brand that will display their findings openly, but because manufacturers are not required to tell the truth, please proceed with caution.
